National Families Week celebrates the role of families in Australia. What does your family mean to you? What do you give to, and get from your family?
Family in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture often has a broader definition than in other cultures. The people involved in children’s lives and who help raise them, often include grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and other community members who are all considered to be family. As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”.
In Aboriginal culture, symbols are used to show our family and community. Use the symbols above to tell us about your family or draw us a picture. Use the leaf provided as your paper – you can print the leaf here or pick up an entry at your local library.
