Overview of project

Our current stormwater network only has capacity for a one-in-five-year flood. Intense rainfall events cause high-risk flooding along The Appian Way and North Terrace, affecting properties, roads and pavements.
This project is designed to upgrade the stormwater network to accommodate a one-in-a-hundred-year flood event – a twenty-fold increase on current capacity. We will do this by increasing drainage capacity under the road surfaces of North Terrace, The Appian Way and The Mall, using pipes and culverts.

The project will take place during 2024 and will last around 15 months. It will be carried out in stages to minimise impact on the community, but it will require road closures for a few months at a time, with diversions in place.
This new stormwater network will futureproof Bankstown CBD from heavy rainfall events and pave the way for the Bankstown Complete Streets Project.

Plan of works

The work will be carried out in stages. Some stages will overlap and different roads will be closed for different periods. Traffic movement for the first stage of the project is shown on the map below.

Please use the diversion shown below, or an alternative route. During this period, the North Terrace entrance/exit to Bankstown Central car park will not be available. Please use alternative entrances to the car park.
Pedestrians will have access at all times, but please follow the instructions on the signs at the location.
