A breath of fresh air is headed for Kelso Waste Facility in Panania.City of Canterbury Bankstown has laid out a vision for a state-of-the-art facility to make it easier for residents to recycle and reuse items.
Council is asking residents to have their say on this significant 20-year vision for Kelso Waste Facility, located at 217 Bransgrove Road.
Kelso has been used as a landfill site for 71 years. The proposed changes will convert the site into a Sustainable Resource Recovery Facility, with the aim of diverting material out of landfill and into the circular economy, and will create local jobs.
It will include a Community Recycling Centre to allow residents to recycle difficult items such as household batteries, car batteries, paints, gas bottles and fire extinguishers that will be accessible year-round. 
Mayor Khal Asfour said he was thrilled to see new ideas for the old site.
“It’s exciting that we’re able to convert the site from an old-fashioned hole in the ground to a space that’s open to residents to drop off hard to recycle materials,” Mayor Asfour said.
“We are also looking at building community education and reuse centres, where residents can learn about sustainable living and buy cheap second-hand goods that would otherwise be landfilled.
“We’ll also continue to reprocess excavated road material to use in filling potholes and other building programs.
“The proposal also includes a new entrance to the site for heavy vehicles, which will take trucks of local roads.” 
Mayor Asfour said he looked forward to hearing from the community.
