Sunbathers, foot dippers and even grand-stand sitters can now feast their eyes on what the new $45 million leisure and aquatic centre at Canterbury could look like.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown has unveiled concept plans for the new centre and an immersive fly-through video tour, which highlights its new features – including a new 50-metre outdoor pool, 25-metre indoor pool, indoor heated therapy pool, zero-depth children’s water play area, an onsite cafe, sauna, gym and much more.

The current 62-year-old facility is due to be knocked down and rebuilt in 2024, and is part of a $170 million strategic plan, which aims to renew and revitalise Council’s services and facilities to improve community health and wellbeing.

“This concept design for the Canterbury Leisure and Aquatic Centre redevelopment is the result of extensive engagement and in-depth consultations with community members and industry experts. It makes me so proud and excited for what’s to come,” Mayor Khal Asfour said.

He said it was one of many first steps towards delivering one of Council’s largest ever projects.

“It’s a massive win for our whole community and is a key investment in you - our community members – to provide leading, world-class facilities for decades to come.”

Canterbury Leisure and Aquatic Centre is home to some of our City’s most elite squad swimmers, including national open water and pool age group champions – some have even been chosen to represent Australia at international championship events.

Harlee Elite swim squad Managing Director Alex Clarke said the redevelopment is welcome news that will assist his coaches and community of swimmers.

“It’s a great plan we can’t wait to see turn into reality. As well as being an unparalleled state-of-the-art centre for everyone in the community to enjoy, it will also undoubtedly help raise our next generation of stars in the sport,” Mr Clarke said.
